Files Owned By root:
My mail server logs are in a directory with root/mail owner/group.
I'd to read, search log files with BBEdit but even the Open Hidden
function is deterred by the ownership/permissions issue.
Now, I can su to root in terminal and browse to my heart's content
but it's nothing like the functionality of BBEdit. Is there a way to
authenticate as root while running BBEdit so I can search those
files using BBEdit's interface?
Can BBEdit be run as root in some way to permit this?
I'd love to be able to read any file at all on my server and it
would be really sweet if I could do it remotely from my workstation
via ssh.
If you want to be able to read root/mail files via BBEdit, the
simplest method is to add your id to the mail group (you are allowed
to belong to more than one group). So long as you belong to a group
you can read and write files in that group.
