Yeah, I'm able to open /var/log/system.log from BBEdit's open
dialog, as well, the same as with the Finder or from Terminal. But
it sounds like the problem in your situation is that you don't have
permissions on the enclosing folder, so you can't even get to the
file for BBEdit to prompt for a password. Is that correct?
