I assume you were being sarcastic, and you're not really happy with
your current workaround. :-) (If I'm wrong, please forgive me.)

Perhaps this workflow would better suit your needs:

1) Drag a folder to the BBEdit icon in the dock. A project will open
with the folder name in the project list.
2) Twiddle open the folder.
3) Select all of the files inside the folder.
4) Drag them all down one line, as a group, which creates copies of
their names OUTSIDE the original folder.
5) Select the original folder, and delete it from the project.
6) Work until 5, close the project and it will prompt you to save it
as a project. (It wasn't clear whether or not you were quitting BBEdit
when you said that Sleep is not an option...so of course, if you don't
quit, you may wish to modify or disregard steps 6 and 7.)
7) When you reopen the project, it appears that BBEdit opens all the
documents that were open last time you closed the project, so you
don't have to reopen them. (At least that's what happened when I just
tested it.)

Probably doesn't solve all your problems, but maybe it will help
streamline things for you a bit?
