Sebastian,

Within the last few days I installed ExpanDrive, and had it set to 
automatically start up. 

I just set it up for manual start, rebooted, and BBEdit is running normally 
now. 

It appears I might need more ram ?  

As soon as I quit out of ExpanDrive, within a short time BBEdit returns to 
normal.

I guess I will go on their website to see if I can find how much memory they 
recommend ?

I'm wondering if you might not have some process running in the background that 
is doing something similar.
