THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

I want to thank each of you who replied to my DocType question, Steve, Ken, Bruce, LuKreme. The information you have given me has been enormously helpful and just what I needed to make a decision on how to proceed. (I had never heard of HotMetal, let alone that it is 1999 vintage software.)

I have never had to tangle with a Doctype issue like this before and never wanted to know quite as much about Doctypes as I now do :)

From what I have learned from you, it only makes good sense to go ahead and take it to HTML5.

Thank you again,

Jack

Thank you Steve,
The problem is that when I use the <DocType HTML>, BBEdit shows 232
syntax errors on the index page alone. If I use 4.01 transitional it only shows about 20 errors.

When was HTML 4.01 transitional relevant? 1999? What are you transitioning from (HTML 3.2) and what are you transitioning to? (HTML 4.01 Strict or HTML5).

I would say that if the page throws errors on HTML 4.01 Strict it is broken, and if you are going to fix it, you are best served fixing it to HTML5.

I'm sure that the 232 errors don't need to be designed out but I don't
know how to get BBEdit to show me only the legitimate syntax errors :)

You're looking at it the wrong way, to my mind. All 232 errors are *errors* and all should be fixed.

I'd prefer not to change the doctype at all but probably cannot get
BBEdit to handle the orignal one.

But HotMetal was a steaming pile of monkey feces. I'm kind of shocked there are that few errors.

point, really.
