[I emailed the following issue to the BBEdit support address earlier today, but I thought would also post it here in the hopes of soliciting user feedback as well. My apologies to any BBEdit staff monitoring this forum who may already have received this problem report through the support channel.]
I have of late been experiencing frequent latency issues while working on files in my BBEdit 10 project. The source project files reside on a LAN-based share on a Linux server which is mounted as an SMB volume on my Mac. The BBEdit project profile resides on my local drive in my "Documents" folder. The problem most commonly occurs whenever I save changes to my project files, but also when I close and open files or switch views from one currently opened file to another in BBEdit. What happens is the cursor becomes a spinning pinwheel, and BBEdit becomes totally unresponsive for about 20-30 seconds. While in this state, some of my other programs may also become unresponsive. I basically have to wait until the default cursor is restored in order to resume work in my opened applications. This is incredibly frustrating because it occurs nearly every time I save changes to my files in BBEdit, and sometimes when I click back and forth between different files. I have only observed this behavior on a consistent basis over the last several days (or perhaps a week or two), so it could have been triggered by a recent update to the OS or to BBEdit. It has, however, become an extreme annoyance, as the constant waiting is very disruptive to my workflow. It is also somewhat erratic in nature because it doesn't ALWAYS happen, and when it does, it doesn't always occur instantaneously after a save or when switching to another file. It may take several seconds for the cursor to change to the pinwheel, frequently interrupting the program just as I have resumed editing. Additionally, when I access my project files remotely over a VPN connection, the problem becomes exacerbated to the point of rendering the program unusable over the VPN (the latency periods are longer and more frequent). This had not previously been a problem. Accessing files over VPN was always a little slower, but performance was still satisfactory. I have tried toggling the "Automatically refresh documents as they change on disk" setting in the BBEdit preferences, but this did not appear to have any effect on the problem. We have not made any changes to our network configuration in some time, and as I mentioned before, the setup I am using had been working fine until recently, so I am at a loss to explain these sudden latency issues. Any suggestions for eliminating this behavior would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
