Understood and I can see how you (and others) would feel this way. I think that the problem is that people frequently expect this "discussion group" to be a support channel: a place to submit bug reports and feature requests. Had the original poster said something along the lines of: "I think a tabbed interface would be an interesting alternative to the list of files currently used in BBEdit. Can anyone point me to the pros and cons of such an interface before I submit a feature request?" they might have gotten similar responses, minus the reminders about the purpose of the list. It's important to remember that you've got some really old-time subscribers on this list. These are people who were using email and discussion groups before the time the Netiquette RFC[1] was first drafted and they have (justifiably) different expectations about how this communication medium should be used. That said, as a long-time netnews user myself, I think the best response is one that informs and thus I try to be supportive while respecting the "rules". Although I'm not thrilled with the open files list, I do think it is among the best possible solutions available and it offers many of the conveniences of common tabbed interfaces: - files can be rearranged by dragging and dropping - files can be navigated via the keyboard Perhaps the only thing I miss is the ability to scroll the Recent Documents windoid (even though the scroll bar is there and appears to be scrollable - I'm assuming this is not a bug) and increase the number of documents displayed (20 would be a better number for me).
