I generally like tabbed interfaces, although I'm also fine with sidebars and popdown lists. The problem I sometimes have with tabs is that if the document filenames are long, the tabs become unwieldy, or hard to decipher if the filenames in the tabs are automatically truncated in various ways.
I have this problem a lot in Photoshop, where I can't find any way to rename the tabs. I like the solution in the Firefox extension Tab Mix Plus, where I can right-click on any tab and choose "Rename Tab" -- and also choose how "permanent" I want that renaming to be. The ideal solution, in my mind, would be to let the BBEdit user choose between multiple interface choices, and even create a mapping list of frequently opened documents and their standard tab "nicknames." So, for example, my document IllustrationScalingMain.js would (without changing the actual filename) always appear in a tab as ISM.js (because I had set up that mapping in advance). I've never seen a program that offered this, but I think it would be cool. -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "BBEdit Talk" discussion group on Google Groups.
