I can't answer your question, but if Return behavior is as designed, then I think Shift-return should go to a new line, not (or in addition to) option-return. Shift-return is a standard for LF instead of CRLF.
Also, to piggyback on the topic of the search window, does anyone know if there is a way to move over to the buttons on the right via the keyboard? So if Next is highlighted, I could instead click Find All, without using the mouse?
