I think the difference is whether you have one document or multiple documents 
per window. The dots Simdude is seeing are in the sub-menu, which lists the 
documents in the selected window. If the window has only one document, there is 
no sub-menu, and BBEdit only has room for the active-window checkmark.

However, if the current document is unsaved, that is indicated by a dot in the 
Close Button -- i.e., the red traffic light button -- the same as always in OS 
X/macOS.
