Unless I'm in a project, I never see the arrow to all open files, because I have the setting to always open files in a separate window, which is how I prefer to work. (So many variables to explain our different experiences!)
I never noticed the dot-in-red-dot at upper left mentioned in another response, so that's also very useful. Between that and the Windows palette, I think I'm good in terms of seeing status at a glance, but I'm still going to enter a feature request. There must be another icon that could be used to indicate "open and dirty." Thanks, everyone!
