I gave your suggestion a try...distance doesn't seem to have any impact.
Setting the txpower via iwconfig doesn't seem to have any obvious
effect either.
Basically, if I wait long enough for a particular request (e.g., loading
a web page), it will eventually work, but no more than a few seconds at
a time. Had been thinking that it was only working when I first
connected, but instead it only seems to work for about 3 or 4 seconds
out of every minute.
