It doesn't work if encryption is wrong. Can you turn encryption off as a
temporary measure to get
communications working, then turn it on after we know that we can
communicate?

:-/  Darn.  It's the correct key in Windows, and in OSX using my wife's
comp.  Unfortunately, it's my landlord's router; I may be able to figure out
how to turn off/on encryption without resetting everything, but as of now I
have no idea.  I'll be out of town for the weekend, so I'll see if I can
figure it out when I return (or at a free wireless cafe).  What still throws
me is that it worked until I ran Synaptic, and the ethernet stopped working
when I ran Synaptic as well, even though all I did was install a chess
program.
At any rate, hopefully you won't hear from me again except to say thanks!
