No, it shouldn't matter. I use a 64-bit distro on an AMD 64 X2 cpu.

I just looked to see what Synaptic is. As it messed up your wired network
as well as wireless,
something must have gotten destroyed in the networking section. Does your
distro have a "repair"
option? If so, try it.

I haven't found a repair option; it is not possible to downgrade is what I
was told. I have gone through this process several times since then-
reinstalling, compiling a 2.6.22 kernel, having wireless, doing some
updates, losing the wireless. I noticed a couple of things...
I believe the package that is updating that is killing my wireless is the
linux-image-2.6.18 etc. package.
Also, a message I kept getting said that the driver I had was version 22,
and the program (iwconfig) only supported up to 20.

I've now reinstalled and put a hold on the linux image package, although I
haven't compiled my new kernel just yet.
I also tried buying an Intel mini PCI express wireless card that I saw
highly recommended for Linux, but my BIOS is configured to reject it.
Never buy Gateway.
