....well, there you go ...I am sane after all. Perhaps should someone put up a 
little compatibility caveat on the b43 webpage, warning people that there are 
issues with this brand/model of card that remain unresolved? Not to 
worry....I'll just backtrack all this on the 32bit P4 box to make sure the 
situation with that older slower hardware....and I guess it's off to the 
computer shop on tuesday to buy some different cards...

...does ebay run 'give away' ads? ..ie; "Give Away ASUS WL-138G V2 wireless LAN 
cards, PCI....suit linux software driver developer.."   (hehe)
