----------------------------------------------------------- From: ChiefCoder Message 9 in Discussion Roshan James, For RH Market share see below: http://www.newsfactor.com/perl/story/20036.html http://www.expresscomputeronline.com/20030714/compwatch1.shtml Now let's "stand" and come to business. "despite teh kernel being teh same and teh system software being teh same the difference in the way the packaging happens, the installer that is used and the online support that is available each flavour of linux is a different operating system with regards to security." This is what we call really funny ! buddy just log on to the links below to "learn" the security related differences in various linux distributions. http://www.pantek.com/library/linux/LDP/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO/x71.html http://mandrake.petra.ac.id:8888/info/max/BkPg155x24.htm#subhead_1 http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=6362 http://lwn.net/2000/0224//security.php3 "as fact, where i come from everyone uses debian... HellOO ! (and strangely RMS and the wagon dont appreciate RHL too much)" First you come from somwhere that is a fraction of total 5.x% of linux users. When last I checked, Debian had 5.6% market share. And who cares if RMS doesn't appreciate RHL. No competitor likes the market leader ;) "i personally like putting my lilo in its rightful place by hand with a little of good old diskedit to help." It's pathetic to know you're still using LILO. Man try using GRUB. And what if you're placing LILO manually in the first sector of the primary hard drive? Come to me if you have problem placing LILO in the MBR. BTW, if you changed LILO memory area or installed LILO manually, that is the flexi feature vendor has provided you. Since I use Windows too, I don't criticise it (because of it's ease-of-use for guys like you) "ACLs : Unix teh system by design never had this kind of concept. It is the WinNT line of systems and IBMs Aix that did anything about with ACLs"\ Did you really understand why did I mention ACLs? It's an integral part of authorisation, which in turn is managed for Security. UNIX systems and other operating systems provide access control lists or ACLs. (This generalises the notion of file owner and group by allowing a file to be accessible to a named list of users and a named list of groups, rather than just a single user or a single group.) ACLs were first introduced in the DOMAIN operating system by Apollo and were later adopted by HPUX and then Solaris. Novell systems (based on Apollo NCS) also provide ACLs. Modern filesystems like NFS 3, AFS and DFS also provide ACL support, but there is currently no standard implementation and the different systems are not compatible. And now, RH Linux 9.0 is going to support ACLs (Security Feature addition, not available in other flavours). Windows partially implemented the concept of ACLs in their Windows NT implementation (3.51), but gradually they did well in Windows 2000 to have a robust ACLs support. It's all Facts, Data and Experiences that matter. I hope Oracle and Red Hat will come out in flying colours with their "Red Hat Server" equipped with EAL4 certification.
