----------------------------------------------------------- From: Sitaraman Message 13 in Discussion Hi Personally speaking, i guess that was the most interesting discussion that i have ever come across!!! Yes, it did become a little bit aggressive in btween, but i guess that it made the thread all the more interesting(sans some strong sentences in between) and if it had not been that way, then we would never have come across all the information that Rosh & sumit had contributed In one way i agree with Rosh strongly. the one thing that really irritates me with (not only Linux but all) Non-MS vendors( & their supporters :) ) is that the constant bickering and prejudice that they exhibit towards MS. When MS markets a product they basically sell it on the basis of the strengths of THEIR product(with the possibvle exception of the petshop v/s petstore controversy :( ). Whereas Non-MS tries to sell its products by punching holes in MS products, which is pathetic(sometimes reminds me of the Indian political parties, who not having anything strong on their side, keep taking a dig on their opponents...). Non-MS Vendors have to accept the fact that MS DID revolutionize the whole industry "by bringing computers closer to people"(did I borrow that line from my company's ad :) ) thru their products and if it had not been for MS, then probably Computers would still be restricted to a select elite as it had been in pre MS days(now tht is going to start another chain of posts!!!). As far as market shares go, pls do understand that people are shifting from their existing UNIX Systems to Linux and not MS to Linux. which means that Linux is being seen/used as a replacement for the UNIX systems. In that case comparing a market share in Servers OSs of a system(UNIX & UNIX->Linux) which existed from the late 60s to a System(MS) which seriously started off in the mid 90s(), is NOT a criticism of MS, but i would rather say that it is a compliment to the MS OSs. The one thing that amazes me about MS is their resillience and their enthusiasm in the face of constant opposition from every tom dick and harry (most of the time without any substance...) their openness to feedback constant and consistent effort to better their own products and making our lives easier to bring better technology and products out to make this industry better. Also understand that the reason why we see so many bugs/problems in MS products is basically because of the high volumes and the deep penetration that MS has had in the general population. UNIX/Linux is a server system and the market volume per se is extremely less compared to MS which has Server + (scores of )Desktop products. So naturally the numbers in terms of exposed bugs will be quite high(which would probably have been the same for UNIX also, if in the early 70s computers had current pentration levels and internet was alive and buzzing as it is now...). Fortunately UNIX guys had the time, luxury( and of course the competence) to fix and tune the OSs in the relatively quiet and dormant times of the 70s and Linux had the advantage of having a ready made base on which to build. MS had no such luxuries... Whatever i have mentioned above is not restricted to Linux but also to other cribbers like Sun etc(who incidentally reminds me of a old school frined(???) who used to keep complaining to our teacher that someone or the other is teasing/beating him, just the way Sun keeps cribbing bout MS in every available public forum)... Do understand that if NON-MS vendors can really come up with competetive products which out-perform MS products then the industry will automatically follow their line, without them ever having to take pot-shots about MS. The very fact that they keep cribbibng bout MS is probably coz their inefficiency/incompetence to do so and that they are not in the same class as MS is !!! regards, sr ----------------------------------------------------------- To stop getting this e-mail, or change how often it arrives, go to your E-mail Settings. http://groups.msn.com/BDotNet/_emailsettings.msnw Need help?
