Let me clear your doubt, In ASP, we can have the VBScript at clent end as well as server, so in ASP.net we have the code behind language as .net complaiant langauage, one of them is JScript.net which has same syntax as of javascript. So in your case, you have jscript at your server end and JavaScript as tour client end. So as soon as yoy removed the langauge directive, it started it as recognising as JScript.net.
