i too am a dotnet/ms tech developer and the statistics given are fine but this is not 
about windows and IE's popularity. the fact remains that an OS independent development 
platform is preferred these days. many companies and governments consider it better to 
not be tied down to a specific vendors software. ofcourse windows and IE are popular 
for desktops which is why the high google rating.    the point to note is that on the 
server side windows is not popular and most of us are developing n-tier applications 
which means the server to be used is unlikely to be windows. this is why rival 
software are being preferred. i have personally been told by the software head of a 
company that they are moving away from micosoft technologies because they dont see any 
advantage in using it except for small to medium applications and those too can be 
developed using rival software platforms just a well.    dotnet is a great technology 
and it should not be tied to windows platform only. otherwise simply ship the dotnet 
CLR along with or as part of the windows OS.
