Hi,

Yes, I know the dilemma of "let it die" or "would I be seen as ignoring a point". I've purposely dropped you as a CC for this reason...

maintainable. I cannot tell you how often someone says to me, "Hey, I've been using this Perl script I got from someone else for a while, but it doesn't make sense to me, either Perl is stupid or I am" and I look at it and find pages of horrible dreck that can be replaced with a dozen lines that are clear to this person. There is more at stake than results.

I agree. But, what I was saying all along wasn't about this and we've drifted due to the length of this thread...

What I said was that if someone who is not as well-versed in Perl as yourself wants to help out, what is wrong with that? And if their intention is good and they state they are not an expert, isn't it somewhat trivial to complain that they didn't say "I think" instead of "I'm not an expert, but..."?!? This is what it was about and not the other issues that entered afterwards...

I understand that people like yourself have a bigger stake in the public perception of Perl than (say) me. But it isn't like I don't care; Perl's popularity means I don't have to learn another language... :-)

IMHO, equal doses of correct Perl code and minimizing the level of mailing list policing :-) here can only help Perl. Non-experts (like myself) simply want to give back to the list what we've taken countless times. Before this last statement leads to even more discussion...the original reply from Ian was (a) correct and (b) when the question changed, he followed-up. So Uri's comment to Ian was based on Ian being honest and admitting he wasn't an expert?

PS: My "stake" in this thread (and why it has dragged on for so long) is that what happened to Ian, could have happened to me here. And my instinct for all the time I've been on this list is to try to give back what I can, when I can. To me, it's like "top-posting is bad"...just something I thought without having googled for it or conducted a survey on. :-) But, if this belief of mine is wrong...then I'd like to know...
