You may want to try that again - VZW dropped the GPS lock a while back. I know for a fact that Google Maps works with device GPS with the Curve, Storm, Storm2, and Tour. I'm pretty sure it also worked with the 8830.

Verizon users are stuck with BB Maps thanks to the VZW GPS lockdown, although Google Maps will use cell towers (in the absence of GPS) to triangulate your approximate location. Most of the Google Apps are web-based and not native apps by themselves, so I don't see any real security risk in allowing it.
