I would back up the 8830 using your BES WebDesktop, then use the BBSAK (BB Swiss Army Knife) to wipe the Curve, then restore the 8830's backup onto it and activate it. I have done this successfully going upwards in version (i.e. Curve to Bold) many times. In theory it should work going down as well.
