More learning today. I am a bloke and do not multitask so neglected to check
some bits on the migration. Like internet access. The Proxy server was set but
not on the MDS so that had to be done. For our organisation users have to
authenticate to the Proxy so the MDS Proxy Mapping had to be changed, which
didn't show on the page so we attempted it several times. Perhaps it's the
screen resolution but the third attempt and a restart of the service on BAS
seemed to get the Proxy setting configured. When a browser page was opened and
a URL entered the Proxy authentication window came up but showed the domain as
being COMPANY.COM. This was corrected by replacing COMPANY.COM with the correct
domain name within a text file:
"\\(Server Name)\c$\Progra m<file:///\\(Server%20Name)\c$\Progra%20m>Files
(x86)\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise
Server\MDS\Servers\instance\config\mdslogin.conf"
Now that should have been it, job done but the handsets could still not get
access to the internet so a call to Vodafone and after a while the engineer
that guided us through the install process came up with KB23933, which advises
changing the "Use Scalable HTTP" setting to "No".
http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB23933
This finally got internet connectivity working on the BlackBerries.
One job down (that I should have checked before) and one job left. Enterprise
Messaging. I'm got to find me that SQL DBA that promised to sort out my problem
and put him to work. You just can't find decent help nowadays!

The dodgy patch is KB981852 which (I am advised) stops BES making the required
MAPI connection to the OCS server.
Your BES server(s) will require the ExchangeMAPIcdo.exe file be installed,
we're using v5.3.16.5 and that seems to work without issue. Oh and the user
accounts on the OCS server need to be remote enabled. If the latter is not done
your users will not be able to authenticate.
Those were the only problems that we had on the OCS side, apart from the fact
that a previous support person had written a script that autoran every evening
and turned off the OCS Remote Access switch. That took a bit of head
scratching: Its working! It's not working! Its working! It's not working!

I don't have any suggestions but seeing that we are about to migrate from BES
4.1 to BES 5 and also have an OCS 2007 system, I'd like to hear about the
"dodgy MS patch" you mention and any other gotchas we need to be aware of that
you could share.

Subject: [Bes-admins] BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger not delivering tohandsets.
Hello All,
First time posting onto the mailing list and a new BES Admin, so be gentle with
me!
We recently migrated from BES 4.1.6 to BES 5.0.2. As part of the migration we
also wanted to offer IM capability to our users so the Enterprise Messaging app
was published. The Server connectivity was configured and the dodgy MS patch
that stops MAPI working properly in this configuration was uninstalled and
hidden. Version 2.1 of the Enterprise Messaging application is pushed to old
8800 handsets, whilst later handsets which have compatible OS versions have
version 2.5 of the Enterprise Messaging application assigned.
Testing of the Enterprise Messaging app was successful after User accounts in
OCS had remote access enabled.
We have encountered a problem however in that the EM application is not
installing to all handsets.
I have checked the scheduled jobs and the schedule is near as dammit empty. I
have checked the OS version on the handsets for compatibility and for the
latter type of handset the version is 4.5, whilst the EM version assigned is
2.5, so they are compatible. The users have BB connectivity and are receiving
mail. I have removed the application from some of the assigned users and
(later) reassigned it. I have changed the IT Policy on a test handset to
Default, blown away the handset and reactivated it. I have factory wiped the
handset using jl_cmder and reactivated but still do not see the EM application,
I have then gotten frustrated and have shaken the handset and shaken it and
shaken it, then nearly thrown it out of the window..........Do you know what,
even shaking it doesn't make the bloody thing work!
:-o
Oh, and I have cheeked that the application has not installed hidden.
It still doesn't install.
Even Google does not offer an answer.
So, any ideas as to why the app is not getting out?
Any help, advice or guidance gratefully accepted.
