I've had users with over 5000 contacts, and it works fine, its the longest
part of the wireless sync, but its not terrible. It can work in the
background and he can still use the phone while it finishes the sync, I
wouldnt separate the contacts out.

If you sync over wifi or USB, it will be very fast.
