Just to throw my two-bits in.  The openGL demos do not seem that much slower
on the machines I've run them on.

On another unrelated note.  The removal of  "coextend" broke some of my
scripts. The fix was simple (edit and replace coextend with coinsert). I
vaguely remember this being discussed in the forum and a quick gmail search
of all my forum messages warned us that "coextend" would be removed.
