Your suggestion would solve the problem But it would mean we and all future
J users would have to carry forward that extra baggage. This is a major
release and it is better to bite that bullet now.

On another unrelated note. The removal of "coextend" broke some of my
scripts. The fix was simple (edit and replace coextend with coinsert). I
vaguely remember this being discussed in the forum and a quick gmail
search
of all my forum messages warned us that "coextend" would be removed.
