I hold down the "i" key.

CPU is near 100% in J process while updating the screen.

As more of the spheres fall outside the rendering region,
frame refresh rate speeds up considerably.

This suggests that the time is dominated by the
 glCallList LORENZ

This also suggests that the GPU is not being used much,
if at all, in that call.

Fundamentally, this is a driver issue.  It's possible that 
if J created the opengl context differently that the GPU 
would be used.  However, other than contacting the intel
and asking for help, I don't know how to find out what the
important issues are here.
