It is early days to say  there is a plan. Right now I'm just tossing out jhs
as something I find interesting. jhs might have a future or it might be a
dead end.

In general your comments are on the current track.

jwdp will most likely continue to work with the 7 series but it is very
unlikely that we'll do any more development work with a java based front
end.
