Just to clarify things in case I've muddied the waters.
  * The following front ends are currently available for J7:
        - jconsole
        - ide/jhs (local and Jsoftware hosted options)
        - ide/gtk

  * AFAICS it is possible to successfully open, edit, load, and run scripts
using
    any/all of these front ends.

  * There are two separate downloads for the beta.
    a) The one available from the beta page: http://www.jsoftware.com/beta.htm
is a packaged install very similar to the J602 installer. The
installation
       options and instructions at
http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/System/Installation
       should still be relevant
This option is probably easiest if you're interested in the ide/jhs
frontend.
Once you've installed, you should upgrade to the latest version of the
ide/jhs
available on JAL using the Package Manager. You can use GUI interface
for the
Package Manager that is available in the browser, or the
       console interface (jpkg).

    b) The one available from the GTK IDE beta page:
       http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/System/Beta/Gtk%20IDE
This is just a compressed archive containing a working installation that
can be extracted to your hard drive. You should upgrade to the latest
version
of the gui/gtk and ide/gtk addons using Package Manager as described on
the
       page linked to above.

  * "command line"/console package manager functionality is available
    for all front ends:
    http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/JAL/Package%20Manager/jpkg

  * Rudimentary GUI package manager functionality is available for
    the jhs frontend

If you want to try the jhs front end hosted by Jsoftware, then you don't have
to download/install anything. Just navigate to http://www.jsoftware.comcreate a
new user (I'm not sure of the details of getting a password etc though).
