Lets just make sure we are talking about the same thing. This is my own
definitions and I don't know if Logitech defines them the same.

Alpha
=====
A version that is possible to run, but contains a lot of bugs and a lot
of half finished features. Most of the time it can't be trusted to play
music, but it can be used by developers to develop parts of the
software. In many of the cases when you are developing, you don't
really need to be able to play music with SlimServer. Not usable in
your living room setup, there is just to much problems with it.
Sometimes the software isn't even possible to run at all.

Beta
====
A version that is stable enough to let end users try it out. Good for
getting early feedback of implemented features. Might not be stable in
all situations, but in many cases it is good enough to use in your
living room setup. Can from time to time contain critical bugs that
makes it unusable.

Production release
==================
A version that is officially released, it might not be completely free
of bugs but it has been tested a lot. It shouldn't contain any critical
bugs that makes it impossible to listen to music.

The reason you don't want end users to run "Alpha" quality software is
that there will be a lot of compaints and questions. The problem with
this is that the developers will need to spend time answering these
instead of developing the software. When going from 6.5.1 to 6.5.2 you
usually doesn't have to go through any alpha stage, you goto the beta
stage directly since it only contains small changes. But when going to
a new major release such as from 6.5 to 7.0 there are huge changes done
that often will break things and make it unusable. The 6.5 release was
also in alpha quality for a while in my opinion, for example during the
phase when the SQLite database was replaced with MySQL. During the first
weeks/months when MySQL was used in Maj/June 2006 the software wasn't
very stable.

I'm pretty sure that Logitech will make 7.0 nightly betas available for
download the normal way as soon as it's stable enough, but this is
probably not the case yet.
