I'd break that down into:

pre-Alpha
==========
Has unfinished features. The software spec and feature set may still
be undergoing finalization. Even for developers, things are shifting
underfoot. Bug reports are discouraged until all features have been
checked in.

This appears to be where SlimServer 7.0 currently stands. Looking at
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SlimServer7Spec, I'd guess maybe
1/3 of that is complete.

Alpha
==========
Feature complete, but unstable enough that it's not ready for
widespread beta testing. Die-hard testers and third party plugin
developers are invited to check it out and begin filing bug reports.
