The Library statistics are the routines that report how many albums, tracks, etc. you have in your library. Ever since that thread I cited above, I've disabled library statistics in order to speed up the web interface. With >35,000 tracks now, my server bogs down with symptoms like yours when they are enabled.
I don't really know the code, but I doubt that the library statistics queries are triggered when one is browsing via the remote. Library statistics are on by default. In SC7, you can disable them at Settings->Advanced->Performance->Library Statistics->Disable Library Statistics.
