Except tabs within a window (ie, done with javascript instead of
'tabbed browsing' internal to the browser) are -slower-.

That data in the unseen-tabs has to be sent so that a javascript script
can switch to those tabs... try viewing source on a site using tabs like
that.

So you must be talking about internal browser tags?  Ie, forcing popup
windows to be rendered within the same browser but as a tab.

Then I suggest you check your browser settings: there is no standard to
force a new tab to open vs a new window.  That is up to your browser to
decide.

It is javascript, not java.  Despite the names the two are not at all
the same thing.

Check your browser settings: mine comes up in a new browser tab. 
Assuming Firefox, this is under TabMix Plus settings: "Open links that
open in a new window in new tab"

YMMV depending on what plugins you have installed in Firefox.
