Do you use ARTISTSORT tags? If so, just a single ARITSTSORT tag of 'lastname firstname' anywhere in the library can cause the sorting you're seeing.
(Also, probably unrelated to your sorting problems... Don't use an ALBUMARTIST or ALBUM ARTIST tag with a value of 'Various Artists'.
