Sorry, I didn't phrase my question clearly enough. I do understand that
you can't connect a serial cable directly, and that there's a special
board that connects to the Controller. Robin has kindly offered to lend
his to me.

My understanding is that this board has a serial connector. Therefore:
can I use a standard serial cable between my PC's COM port and the
SBC's add-on board, rather than a USB-DB9 adaptor as described in the
wiki? (I'm guessing the wiki says this in the expectation that most
people only have USB ports).

I believe this is no longer true. Reading other threads, it seems that
some intermediate firmwares gave the error message and then allowed you
to continue - at which point the Controller would talk to your local
SqueezeCenter but not SqueezeNetwork.

However, when I updated to 7.3.1, the Controller firmware it installed
ended up giving the error message *but no way to continue*. The
Controller was rendered completely inoperable. (I managed to back the
firmware out and have returned to SC 7.0 for the time being).
