You need the small circuit board that came with the first batch of beta controller. This circuit board is a sort of port expander which has a serial port amongst many other connectors. The USB-serial adaptor connects to the circuit board.
The circuit board has a connector which fits into the socket in the base of the controller. However as kdf pointed out - there is a software tool needed to update the nvram and also a valid uuid needs to be allocated.
