Transcoding is the only option, sorry if that wasn't clear. There is just going to be "native" transcoding support, so you don't have to install any plugins and it should "just work". We're not quite to that point yet. Feel free to follow the progress on 'Bug 10602' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10602).
