Ah, sorry you may have misunderstood what I was trying to say.

I'd only ever enter one year value in the YEAR tag for each song.

The effect of browsing albums by year (Browse Years) though should be
that an album can appear under multiple years, because an album would
contain songs from different years.

The only issue is with Browse Albums, sorted by year - if the album is
to appear only once in the list, what year would it be sorted under? 
The first, last, highest, lowest?  I guess it's the same issue as
browsing albums sorted by artist, in that there can be multiple artists
for an album.  i.e. I don't think Squeezebox Server has a specific rule
for this sort of behaviour (except if a single album artist had been
defined, it would be sorted under that artist).

I never use Browse Albums, except for browsing by album name, and
that's fairly rare.  I use the other browse methods, as they cater for
1-M relationships.  Browse Albums needs to effectively do the reverse
M-1 mapping when not sorting by album title, so it will not work without
assumptions or more data that is not available with standard tags.
