I don't think people are looking for "improvement" by renaming it. The
"perception" out there is that when software is in "Beta" regular user
are invited to test with "some" caveats. This means that most of the
product "core" functionality is in place and almost finished. Have you
seen how long google keeps "betas" out there for regular end users to
test? This "beta" code is highly polished. I'm not trying to be strict,
but when "Alpha" code is released it's understood that this type of
release is targeted for developers or skilled end users (techies) with
the understanding that not all functions are available or completed and
that lots of "visible" bugs that had not yet been addressed by the core
developers still exist. In other words, very unstable code. Again, I'm
not trying to say that this rule is written in stone... but beta is to
uncover how the code wiill behave in the computer environment of as many
"regular" (joe six pack) users as possible. The "beta" trial should help
uncover bugs related to interactions with other programs in the plethora
of "non-development" "non-techie" environments out there. Very stable
code as the company/developer does not want to leave the wrong
impression on potential buyers.
