You know what... You may be seeing an obscure bug, after all. I didn't think it manifested itself in the web interface, but maybe it does sometimes.
When you have exactly _one_ artist in your library that has their own album(s), and then you also have compilation albums, sometimes the artist count is off by one and you only see the Various Artists in the artist list. The thing that makes it a really obscure bug is that virtually nobody has a library like that.
