Yes, apparently some sort of misunderstanding.
In Mp3tag for MP3 files you _do_ want to use ITUNESCOMPILATION. This
maps to the ID3v2 TCMP frame. You also want to use ARTISTSORTORDER on
MP3 files, which is mapped by Mp3tag to TSOP.
For ALBUMARTIST you could use the literal 'ALBUMARTIST', which Mp3tag
will write as a user defined TXXX frame and it will be seen by
SqueezeCenter. Then you would use ALBUMARTISTSORT as the sort field for
that string.
But for album artist you can also use BAND and BANDSORTORDER in Mp3tag,
which become TPE2 and TSO2, respectively. These are the frames used by
iTunes for album artist and have become something of a standard. If you
do this, you must set the SqueezeCenter setting
Settings > Music Library > Treat TPE2 MP3 tag as Album Artist

The main thing is that for compilations, don't add a BAND/ALBUMARTIST
tag.
What _I_ do is to add the COMPILATION (FLAC files) or ITUNESCOMPILATION
(MP3 files) to every track in my library. Set to 1 on albums that are
compilations and 0 for albums that are not or that I want to force to be
seen as non-compilations. As I said above, it isn't strictly necessary
to tag all tracks with this field, but for me it's easy to do and leaves
no room for doubt.
The ARTISTSORTORDER tag should correspond to the ARTIST tag in any
given track (both compilations and non-compilations). But again, it
isn't required - 'Abba' will sort under A, and 'Beck' will be sorted
under B. The most common use for ARTISTSORTORDER is to do last name,
first name sorting, as in
ARTIST=Tom Jones
ARTISTSORTORDER=Jones, Tom

I say would use an update scan any time you add new albums to the
library. It's faster and SqueezeCenter is very good at correctly
picking up new library content. I would use a full rescan if you've
made a lot of tagging changes or have deleted/moved files, as
SqueezeCenter is less good about removing stuff from its database. Say
you have a misspelled ARTIST tag that was previously 'Frank Sinatr' and
change it to 'Frank Sinatra'. You'll probably find that if you correct
the spelling and then run an update scan that 'Frank Sinatr' still shows
up in your artist list. That's not a fatal problem, but it can be
cleared up by running a full scan.

Normally, when you're making tagging changes like this, you do a
significant portion of your library, so running one full rescan
shouldn't be an enormous burden. You can use update scans when you add
new albums, which in the long run, after you've fixed up your library
tagging, will become the most common operation.
You can also use the Rescan Music Library plugin to schedule a full
rescan to run each night while you work at fixing up your library. Turn
it off after things look good and you're no longer making extensive
tagging changes.

I think it's just being renamed. The SQLite branch will be getting bug
fixes.
See my post above about the 'one artist' bug. Make sure you add one
more artist to your small test library before you do more testing.
