>By my way of thinking, if an album has an ALBUMARTIST then it should not be >considered a compilation. It "belongs" to the ALBUMARTIST, not to the >VA artist. It may be that an explicit COMPILATION tag overrides this. > I agree, Album Artist should take precidence over Compilation, if they must be mutually exclusive.
However, the two could legitimately co-exist. In SBS 7.5, Album Artist and Compilation can almost co-exist, but doesn't quite work. eg. album "10 Years Remixed" by Banco De Daia. All of the songs are Banco De Gaia songs which appear on their other albums, so it's a compilation album, but all songs have been remixed by other artists. So, I have labelled each song with ARTIST=<the remix artist>, ALBUMARTIST=Banco De Gaia, and COMPILATION=1. It therefore appears as a compilation album (in Artists > Various Artists), and also under Artists > Banco De Gaia because I have other regular Banco De Gaia albums. However, if I didn't have other regular albums, it would only appear as a compilation. More important is for people who browse Albums, ordered by Album Artist. They use Album Artist as a label, to group/sort albums. eg. soundtrack albums could be COMPILATION=1 and ALBUMARTIST=Soundtrack (not that I do this, but I know other people like this).
