It looks like my limited use case for ALBUMARTIST, to optionally "promote" an otherwise VA-only artist to "full artist list" status, is really a misuse of the tag: trying capitalize on a side effect, which unfortunately has an attendant undesirable side-effect of genre pollution.
So, what is an ALBUMARTIST for, in the SBS context? In the classical music realm, if you are composer-centric, you'll tag your library so that ARTIST == composer. And because composers rarely stray outside of a single genre (at least given the genre classifications that I use) it seems like ALBUMARTIST has next to no role to play in such a collection. So, back to the drawing board. PS: I think what's changed in terms of VA with 7.6 is that it's now on by default.
