afaik, a blank frame is the same as no frame.

and you are correct, almost everything fills in AA, comp or not, except
itunes, which last i checked leaves AA blank, but uses a comp tag
instead.  (EAC doesn't do AA either, but it might be possible to get it
to, and its a small niche app anyway)

the SBS "logic" of making decisions on comp status based on the
existence, or not, of AA tags is imo, dopey and mostly useless except
for a tiny minority of users, b/c except for EAC rips, everything will
have AA tags or comp tags.

it depends how you define what a comp is.  a comp could be a greatest
hits as you said of a single artist, but SBS doesn't think so.  SBS
says that if an album has ANY mismatch of the artist frame on even only
one track, thats a comp, period.  so all you can do at that point is
either set explicit comp tags one way or the other, or set AA tags, or
both.
