I generally add a custom tag, called ORIGARTIST, which I use Custom Scan to read, and define some Custom Browse menus to browse cover songs in various ways. There was some vague hope that with SBS 8, we might see some additional schema changes to support extra contributor types. 3 years later and no sign that it will ever see daylight.
