I tend to put the album artist name as an additional artist, if I want to see
it associated with the song. i.e. if I have an album where an artist appears
on every song but has a guest performer on each song, I would put the album
artist and guest artist both as ARTIST tags, and set the ALBUM ARTIST too.

Then I'd see both in NP details, but wouldn't expect to see the Album Artist
repeated again.

Yes, that's what it's for - only appropriate for album context.

I generally add a custom tag, called ORIGARTIST, which I use Custom Scan to
read, and define some Custom Browse menus to browse cover songs in various ways.

There was some vague hope that with SBS 8, we might see some additional schema
changes to support extra contributor types. 3 years later and no sign that it
will ever see daylight. But we do have other really useful music player
features like a Facebook app and a picture viewer instead, and a new DB engine
that provides no new benefits ;-)
