Right, can you get that to work on my cheap wireless laptop or netbook
?
Laptops are the only type of computers normal people are going to have
fairly soon.

For reference, none on my non technical friends have purchased a
stationary computer during the last years, all of those that have
purchased a new computer have got a laptop and got rid of their old
stationary computer.
Most of them use some version of Windows and a few use Mac, none use
Linux. But most of them have a laptop or netbook which is connected
wireless and due to this doesn't work with WOL and due to this doesn't
work as a music server and none of them would like to have a bulky
external USB drive attached to it as this would completely destroy the
mobility. I have a few friends that have Linux and servers but I
consider them to be geeks like myself.
I think what all of us really would like is something like a CD player
but without the CD drive.
Basically, a box you put in the living room or somewhere else in the
house which is silent, doesn't need any maintenance, doesn't use power
when it isn't used and is automatically turned on whenever someone uses
a remote in any room in the house to start to play some music. And it
works with your Squeezeboxes and it works with your computers, anywhere
you like to play your music within the house. You can put the box in the
living room or you can put it somewhere else, it's your choice, but it's
not a computer it's just something that works and makes sure you always
have access to your music whenever you want to listen to something.
It's definitely not going to run Windows 7. This is what needs to be
done to compete with the Apple world where the music is on the
iPad/iPhone and you stream it to your AppleTV, dockingstation or
amplifier/TV supporting AirPlay.
The current Squeezebox models requiring you to either have a computer
powered on or to mess with installation on non supported NAS boxes is
not ready for the mass market, it needs to be a lot simpler for that. I
know some of us defends the system where a computer is needed but as I
look at it we ONLY do this because the system we really want isn't
available.
And since this is the LMS thread, exactly the same thing applies to my
photo library and my video collection.
