I can see why someone would want 7.8 to be an official release, but there's a high likelihood that that won't happen. So if there's something you really like in 7.8, why not just download the current 7.8 (which is very stable) and run that? Save a copy of the download so you can always go back to it if you need to reinstall or install it on a different computer. You don't need to follow the forums closely, or at all.
