IIRC, you can't simply download firmware for the SP based players and
manually force an update by placing the files in cache/updates, like you
can with ip3k firmware. I thought that the server must first pull them
from Logitech's servers in order to trigger the update. Or am I wrong?

Oh, you might actually be up to something. Yes, IIRC the firmware is
only pushed if "check for updates" is enabled. I already added some code
to read files from the Firmware folder, too. But this wouldn't be called
without first checking online.
And you'll always need the .version file, too.
