I've done many output recaps on the Classics. Unless the pads and traces have been burned up, a bad soldering job can usually be redone pretty easily. The stock coupling caps are cheap generic electrolytics. Dropping in a pair of Silmics makes for a very nice upgrade repair on these for next to nothing. In my experience, Classics are much more responsive to improved power supplies over a DAC upgrade, and I would start with that before dropping an outboard DAC on one. It's a much cheaper and more effective tweak that extends beyond the SB. The stock supply is a big noise-maker -- both on the output and the mains supply sides. And on the Classics, even using an optical link, a DAC chain with strong de-jitter/reclocking is needed to make it worthwhile. And once you start down that path, you are better off just jumping over to a Touch as a digital head end. The Touch is just better and quieter all around for those 'supplements'. But after all these years, I still prefer the VFDs on the older ones, if only because I can see them better from across the room. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ sgmlaw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13995 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108142 _______________________________________________ beta mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
