I also always missed this. When selecting in vertex select mode, I would expect for vertices in other islands to be selected as well. I would use it in face select mode though.
I usually went around this by identifying where on the model is the island I wanted selected, and then used select linked with limit with seams turned on in the 3d View - but that's a roundabout way of doing this.
